Where our data comes from

Know My Postcode does not invent numbers. Every figure in a report or area guide is taken from an official or open source, listed below, and shown with its date wherever we can. Reports are built live in your browser from these sources when you search, so they are as current as the source itself.

We are an independent site, not affiliated with any of these bodies. Where a source does not cover a place, we say so on the page instead of showing a guess.

TopicSourceCoverageUpdatedWhat to know
CrimePolice.uk street-level crime (data.police.uk)England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Not Scotland, and not Greater Manchester Police, which does not publish street-level data.Monthly, about two months behindWe show the last six months within roughly 1 mile of the postcode, by crime type. Police.uk moves some crimes to the nearest "anonymous" point, so streets are approximate.
Sold pricesHM Land Registry Price Paid DataEngland and WalesMonthlyWe show the median, not the mean, because single large sales skew averages. If a postcode has fewer than three sales we widen to the postcode sector and say so.
Price trendsUK House Price Index (HM Land Registry, ONS, Registers of Scotland)UK, by local authorityMonthly, about two months behindLocal authority averages, not street level. Figures on area guides are the latest month published.
Private rentsONS Price Index of Private RentsEngland and Wales by local authority; Scotland by rental market area; region where no local figure existsMonthlyNorthern Ireland has no area-level figures. Rents are averages for the whole council area.

BroadbandOfcom Connected Nations, January 2026 fixed broadband coverageUK, by postcodeRoughly twice a yearAvailability (the share of premises that can order 30 Mbit/s, 100 Mbit/s, 300 Mbit/s and gigabit), not the speed a given household receives.
Mobile coverageOfcom Connected Nations, January 2026 mobile coverageUK, by local authorityRoughly twice a yearPublished by Ofcom only at council level, so every postcode in a council shows the same figure.
Flood riskEnvironment Agency flood risk zones and surface waterEngland onlyRollingWales (NRW), Scotland (SEPA) and Northern Ireland (DfI) are not yet included. A failed lookup shows as unknown, never as low risk.
NoiseDEFRA strategic noise mapping, round 3 (road and rail Lden)England only, major roads and railways in agglomerationsEvery five yearsModelled values. Absence of a modelled band does not mean a place is quiet.
Planning applicationsPlanIt (planit.org.uk), which collates council planning registersEngland, Wales and ScotlandDailyMedium and large applications within 1 km in the last two years. Coverage depends on each council publishing its register.
SchoolsOfsted inspection outcomes and Department for Education dataEnglandAs publishedLatest published Ofsted judgement. Some schools have not been inspected recently.
